SBOC MapRun – Birchgrove

A MapRun score event from Swansea Bay Orienteering Club. You have 60 minutes and a map with 30 checkpoints, each worth 10 to 30 points. Visit as many as you like, in any order, by any route, and get back within the time. Late back costs 10 points a minute.

Entry

Free, but please enter here in advance so we know how many maps to print. Entry on the night is accepted while maps last, first come first served.

Registration from 18:00, briefing 18:25, mass start 18:30. New to MapRun? Arrive early to ask questions.

The MapRun app

Your phone is your timing chip: the MapRun app records your checkpoint visits. Install it and download the event at home, where it is easier to check your phone is compatible. Events are named LocationDDMMYY. On the night, identify yourself at registration, collect your map and start.

Bring

Phone, pen, head torch, and reflective or high-visibility clothing. A waterproof in case the weather is grim: cagoules may be compulsory. Some paths may be muddy and slippery.

Juniors

Because of the urban setting, all under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Accessibility

Competitors have enjoyed these events in wheelchairs and on mobility scooters. Message the organiser in advance for a map annotated with key obstacles such as stairs and narrow gates.

Safety

You take part at your own risk, on public streets and paths with traffic. Use crossing points where there are any: stop, look and listen. Watch for vehicles leaving driveways. Busy roads are marked out of bounds and must not be crossed. Once you have started, report to the finish whether or not you complete the course.

A risk assessment has been completed. If you have a high-risk medical condition, you may leave details in a sealed envelope at registration. It is opened only in a medical emergency, and destroyed after the event unless you collect it.

Non-members are not insured under British Orienteering's public liability policy.

Photographs may be taken to promote the sport. Tell the organiser if you would rather not be included.

Check sboc.org.uk for the latest, especially when weather warnings are forecast. A cancellation or postponement is posted there and in the SBOC Facebook group.

Birchgrove

Parking and registration in the car park by the Rugby Club, off Heol Dulais (what3words ///under.carry.potential). Urban terrain: parkland, housing estates and industrial areas. Map from 2022, pre-printed at 1:7,500.
